ARTIST STATEMENT

A glance at the sky, the clouds and the moon and the sun behind a layer of polluted air. The way waves crash on a beach, the way a shadow casts on my bedroom wall, how moonlight illuminates and softens my skin as I sit on the secluded rooftop of my other home. How would I create that? How could I capture that? A sharp shadow from the harsh light spilling through the net, casting a shadow on the painted concrete. I position the camera and look through the viewfinder, the perfect shot captured in time with a single click. My hand holds a handful of prismacolour colored pencils, each one a different shade to create the depth of skin. Layers and combinations of colors to create the bags under her eyes, the brightly lit areas of her face, the depth of her eyelids and the round shape of her lips. The water bottle being illuminated by the bright fluorescent school lights creating a reflective shadow on the table it’s set on. How would I re envision that? My mechanical pencil sketches out large loopy shapes and then I deconstruct the bottle as a whole, seeing each shadow and each highlight as a separate piece and working individually.

My art reflects what I see and feel, sometimes even who I am. It's individual to me and my personal life experiences. It shares what I feel as an artist, stark, simplistic, alone, chaotic, myself.
